Thursday Morning

Artist Statement:

It was a frigid sunny morning when a photographer was seen carrying a 4 foot mirror across campus.

She almost tripped but lived to tell the tale.

“Thursday Morning” was a pivotal moment for me as an artist and a photographer because I learned more about capturing emotion and different lighting techniques. When I was thinking about this show, I had difficulty choosing a theme. I saw the technique that I used in two of my black and white photos (where there are dots of light on Emily’s and Kiersten’s faces), I immediately wanted to try it in my own work so I started to think...Why don’t I try to take a couple more photos like this to add into my group of photos from before to spruce it up a bit?  I texted Kiersten asking if she would model for me and she was all for it. Then Emily heard about it and she was very interested in being photographed as well. After figuring out all the logistics, we were set and it was actually happening! I purchased a pack of plastic spoons with holes in them and some sifters to add texture. I also used the plastic bag that the spoons came in to capture the hazy lighting in Emily’s portrait which is the first one at the top. When we were finished, we looked at all the photos and were amazed at how they turned out. Remember when I said I was just adding maybe one or two to my show? Well it turns out, that every photo in “Thursday Morning” is from that day.
